Our Methodology
AutographData was established to solve a singular problem in the hobby: the reliance on opaque "expert opinions" instead of structural, comparative data.
Inclusion Criteria for Exemplars
We do not accept third-party authentication stickers as sole proof of authenticity. For a signature to be included in our primary exemplar database, it must meet one of the following criteria:
- In-Person Provenance: The item was signed in the presence of a known, vetted witness with photographic corroboration.
- Institutional Origin: The document originated from a verified institutional archive (e.g., National Archives, Presidential Libraries) where chain of custody is absolute.
- Bank Checks and Legal Documents: Executed financial or legal documents that carry inherent legal liability for forgery at the time of creation.
The "Secretarial" Problem
From the 1930s onward, high-volume signers (presidents, major actors, prominent athletes) employed secretaries to answer mail. Many of these secretaries became highly skilled at mimicking their employer's signature.
Our database categorizes these distinctly. We do not delete secretarial examples; we log them meticulously so collectors can identify the subtle differences in pressure, slant, and letter formation that distinguish the secretary from the principal.
Data Independence
AutographData is not affiliated with PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett, or any auction house. We do not sell autographs. We do not offer paid authentication services. Our data is presented as an independent reference tool.
